NORTON DISNEY. - THE VILLAGE FEAST.
October 10th. 1894

The feast was last week celebrated in quite a lively fashion for so small and scattered village.   There were the usual visitors in the persons of shooting gallery, cocoa nut shies, and skittle proprietors.   Monday was the principle day.   Host Trustin, of the Sportsman Inn, had collected a good sum of money from tradesmen and others, and this he devoted to prizes for a capital programme of athletic sports, which were held in a neighbouring paddock.   Prizes:-
HANDICAP 120 YARDS FLAT RACE. - Run in a series of heats; first prize 12/-, second 6/-, third 2/-. 1st Heat - 1, Martin, 20yds. 2, Kelly,4yds.  2nd Heat - 1, Langton, 2yds; 2, Drake, 6yds.   3rd Heat - 1, Maxted, 9yds; 2, Merchant, 6yds.   4th Heat - 1, C. Blyton, 7yds,; 2, J. Gent, 9yds.   Final - 1, Blyton; 2, H. Martin; 3, J. Langton.   A Close race, the winners all being within 1½ yards at finish.
GIRLS RACE, 100 YARDS. - Six started.   A. Minkley, 16yds., 1s. 6d., won easily; Walton, 20yds., 1s., being second; and S. Priestley, 20yds., 6d., third.
BOYS RACE, 100 YARDS. - Six started. 1, 1s. 6d., W. Trustin, 20yds.; 2, 1s., F. Johnson, 20yds.; 3, 6d., W. Walton, 20yds.
LADIES RACE, 100 YARDS. - 1, dress piece, Lucy Johnson; 2, ½lb. tea, Mrs. H. Minkley; 3, ¼lb. tea, Mrs. Bates.
POLE JUMP. - Six entries.   1, 5s., J. Langton; 2, 3s.,C Blyton; 3, 2s., C. Bell.   Owing to an accident caused by the pole breaking, Bell sustained a nasty knock on the head, and consequently had to be content with third honours.   He had on a recent occasion beaten C. Blyton.
HIGH JUMP. - 1, 4s., A. Drakes; 2, 2s., J. Langton; 3, 1s., C. Bell.
BICYCLE RACE. - Seven entries.   C Blyton, Drury (Housham), H. Kelly, and R. Martin were mounted on safeties, and H. Martin, Langton, and H. Minkley on ordinary old-fashioned machines.   C. Blyton, mounted on his £20 pneumatic safety, recently awarded him in the Sunlight Soap Competition, came in a good first, 10s.; Drury, who led until the last lap, 2nd. 4s.; and Kelly 3rd. 2s.
LABOURERS RACE (for Norton Disney labourers only). - Three started.   1, William Bates, new spade, value 4s. 6d.., given by Messrs. Mather and Tomlyn, ironmongers, Newark; 2, John Priestley, 2s.; 3, Henry Cooling, 1s.
Mr. J. T. Poucher officiated as starter, Mr. W. Priestley as Handicapper, and Messrs. F. Martin and Whitby as judges.
At the close a public tea was provided by Host Tustin, at the popular price of 6d., and extensively patronised.   Afterwards dancing was indulged in, and kept up more or less each evening this week.   Thanks are due to all subscribers, and to those who contributed in various ways to the enjoyment of the visitors, who were very numerous this year.
