NORTON DISNEY. - At the Kesteven Petty Sessions Court, at Lincoln, on Friday, Wm. Priestley, labourer, of Stapleford, was charged with stealing a packing box and a bag of soot, value 2s. 6d., the property of Isaac Carter, at Norton Disney, on the 3rd. April. - Mr. Trotter appeared for the prosecutor, and Mr. Williams for the defendant, - Mr. Trotter said the prosecutor was the Landlord of the Sportsman Inn, Norton Disney, up to the 6th. April.   On the 3rd. inst., he had a sale, and several things, including the box and soot, were put in a hovel for the purpose of not being sold, and thy were not sold.   The prosecutor missed them after the sale, and suspecting the defendant he followed the trap in which he had driven away and caught it up.   He got into the cart and there saw the box in a water tank which was in the cart.   The defendant, on being asked to account for this, made no reply.   The soot was also in the cart, and the defendant said he bought that, and had got the bill to show.   That was untrue, as no bills were given.   The prosecutor took away the box, but thinking the defendant might have a bill for the soot he did not take it away. - Evidence was called in substantiation of the charge, and the clerk of Messrs. Bailey and Son, who were the auctioneers, said he did not remember any soot being sold. - The prosecutor admitted that the defendant invited him to go to Stapleford and examine the articles in the cart when it was unloaded, and he did so. - Mr. Williams said the sale was evidently a clearance sale, and the prosecutor had no object in reserving any of the things.   The box was bought with some plants which were in it, and the soot was bought with some potatoes. - There was a previous conviction against the defendant for larceny three years ago. - A fine of 20s., including costs, was imposed.
