GIPSIES FINED
For camping on the Highway

Collin Grey, Ambrose Grey, and Lewis Grey the younger, Horse dealers, Wilson Street, Lincoln, were summoned before Mr. N. Clayton and Mr. R. C. Bergne-Coupland, at the Kesteven Petty Sessions, at Lincoln, on Friday, for unlawfully pitching a tent and camping on part of the Highway, in the Parish of Norton Disney, on the 8th inst.   P.c. Williams stated he found the defendants sleeping underneath a cart in Hollow Lane, about half past three o'clock on Sunday morning, the 8th inst.   A sheet had been run round the wheels of the cart, and another sheet over the top of the cart, so as to form a tent.   In the cart were cooking utensils and provisions, as if for a lengthened stay.   It was a usual thing for them to put their horses into other people's fields for the night, and complaints had previously been received of their camping on the highway.   Collin Grey alone appeared to answer the charge, and he stated they were travelling from Spilsby and making their way to Mansfield, but finding they could not get there that night they decided to stay on the highway until the morning, believing they would do no harm.   A fine of 10s., and 7s. 6p. cost was imposed upon them.
